Playstation 3 is known to be among the top electric consumer products. It makes your bill compete with the cost of the device itself. Sony’s answer to that is the new third-generation hardware that is set to lower PS3’s power usage and therefore your electric bills.
But there is more to this than lowering your monthly electric bill. The idea of lowering power consumption comes with a bigger incentive – an increase in PS3’s durability and efficiency.
The new PS3 consumes 10-20% less power than the current version. The new PS3 is said to consume between 100-120 watts, that is a large drop from the 135 watts usage today, and even larger compared to the original PS3 release of 180 watts.
Sony put a new 65 nanometer shrink of the RSX GPU. It is added to the 65 nm cell processor of the game console. Playstation 3’s cooling system is also replaced with smaller aluminum plates. This is a big improvement coming from its original copper heat pipes.
There are rumors that this step is actually a precursor to Sony’s plan of coming up with a slimmer PS3. Also Sony is planning to reduce PS3’s cell processor to an even lower value of 45nm. According to them, that would mean a decrease of up to 40% compared to the newly upgraded 65 nm version. In any case, the new PS3 is one clear reason to upgrade your favorite gaming console.
