Simple Tips for Fixing Common Sound Problems
Home

You bought a new personal computer. You were so excited to use it but got disappointed when you can’t hear any sound from it. What could be the problem?

If you cannot hear any sound from your PC, you must take note of these troubleshooting tips for fixing common sound problems.

What To Do When Your Computer Produces No Sound

  1. Check first if your computer has a sound card.
  2. Log in as administrator before performing these succeeding steps.
  3. Click the Start button then go to Control Panel. Go to System and Maintenance and then click Device Manager. If you are asked for a password or confirmation, you have to do so.
  4. Go to the Sound, Video and Game Controllers category and expand it. See if a sound card is listed. If there is, it means you have a sound card installed. If you can’t find it in this category and you firmly believe that you installed one, you have to check the Other Devices category.
  5. If there’s no sound card listed, you have to install one.
  6. If there is a sound card and you find a yellow question mark beside or near its name, there might be a problem. Right-click the name of the sound card and then go to Properties.
  7. Go to the General Tab and then check the Device status box to know the problem with the sound card.

You should also check if your speakers are plugged or connected into a functional power source and are turned on. Check also if the volume of the speaker is not too low or muted. Sometimes we overlook these simple details.

Make sure too that your speakers are properly connected to the computer. You can do this by plugging the speaker cable into the speakers and the correct jack on the computer.

Sometimes when you plug in headphones, the sounds from the speaker are automatically cut off. So check if your headphones are plugged into the line out jack of the sound card or computer.

Another common sound problem is sounds from the speaker are crackled or distorted. To address this problem, you have to make sure your speakers are properly connected to the computer.

You can also check the audio driver installed in your computer. Sometimes the problem lies in the audio driver particularly in cases where music skips or breaks up toward the end of the song when played in Windows Media Player. Try disabling optional speaker effects.

If these tips don’t work, consider downloading a new sound driver for your audio device.
