Think of MySpace, Bebo and other social networking sites that didn’t really make a lot of buzz. Now think of a site like that, established 10 years ago but is still in beta. Can’t think of any? Let us give you one: Kiwibox.
Kiwibox a social networking site that was first launched in 1999 has gone out of beta yesterday. Dubbed as “Kiwibox 2.0”, the site sports a sleeker and very Web 2.0 interface, it now has a drag-and-drop profile pages, a new casual-gaming section, more video content aggregated on “KiwiboxTV,” and more editorial content contributed by members.
Kiwibox is different from other social networking sites because it is geared towards the teens and it has a point system where users can work to receive points that are exchangeable to perks and freebies such as iPods.
Users can earn points by doing activities on the site such as writing articles and simply filling out certain profile criteria.
Although the site will mark its 10th year next year, it only has 1.8 members. That number is only a small fraction of large websites like MySpace and Friendster.
Kiwibox now hopes to drive more members in by following creative marketing campaigns like content partnership and syndication across the Web. Site admin believes that the unique combination of content and social networking shall finally take the spotlight.
