Nvidia doesn’t want to make the same mistake that they did when Windows Vista debuted. For those of you who don’t know, back when Windows Vista debuted there were many errors that were caused by Nvidia device drivers. These drivers weren’t released fast enough, tested well enough, or fixed soon enough.
The company suffered a severe onslaught from critics and got a rather bad reputation for its device drivers. Now that Windows 7 is getting ready to be released Nvidia has decided to release device drivers for its cards many months sooner than it did for Vista. Actually Nvidia hadn’t released final drivers for their hardware even by Vista’s initial launch. The other problem was that Vista had been in development for several years and Nvidia didn’t act soon enough. By doing this the company hopes to avoid the slew of problems that they had when Vista released.
Although consumers will be delighted that the company is actually staying on par this time, the company has another reason for doing this. When an operating system first comes out there are many companies that are fighting to be the supplier for the computers. If your hardware has a lot of errors or crashes the computer then you will most likely not be the supplier for that company. To help get their chips in more OEM computers Nvidia is trying to send a statement out early that they’ve got their act together.
It’s great to see that Nvidia is preparing itself ahead of time. We can only hope that other companies are doing the same and that the transition from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is much smoother than it was from XP to Vista. Hopefully many companies will also focus their support on the 64bit versions of the operating systems as well.
