Micron proudly announced that it will release its 256-Gigagbyte solid-state disk drive for notebooks this coming fall. The new product accompanies the earlier and lighter SSD with 128-GB.
This new drive is the latest member of Micron’s Real SSD C200 group. The revolutionary drives will be a part of the P200 family according to the company. A 1.8-inch version of the C200 drive is also being developed, with capacities also topping out at 128 Gbytes.
The C200 drives sports a speed of 3Gbits/s SATA interface. This value equates to 250MB/s reading speed and 100MB/s writing speed. But speed is not the only thing that is good about this hardware. It consumes minimal power too. Marking less than 2.5 watts in active mode and a negligible 0.5 watts in idle mode, this drive is a perfect fit for motherboards that eat up too much power.
Micron revealed that the additional hard drive capacity was achieved by moving to a 34-nm 2-bits-per-cell format. This is what Justin Sykes, director of marketing for the SSD business said in a press release.
This new nanometer technology was used in partnership with Intel. Intel is rumored to release its SSD roadmap within the coming weeks.
There is no announcement yet as to how much the new C200 family member will be sold at. Dean Klein, vice president of memory system development at Micron hinted that it will have a competitive price.
