Intel exposed its first ever halogen-free Xeon processors. This processor sports a chip that is said to be a huge step in eradicating non-environmentally friendly components.
The high-tech chips are made using Intel’s unique 45-nanometer manufacturing process. The new Xeon chip uses hafnium-based high-k metal gate formula instead of halogens.
The new technology is applied in three quad-core systems: X5492, X5470, and L5430. The chips can run fast without a need for huge power input.
The new chips aim to support huge network systems including manufacturers of workstations, blade and mainstream servers. Kirk Skaugen, VP and general manager of Intel’s server platforms group boasted that clients using systems with the new Xeon processors will enjoy a huge performance to energy efficiency ratio alongside the very new technology of halogen-free chips.
The new 5400-series processors can now be purchased. The X5270 is not yet available however.
Bulk prices are as follows: 1,000 are $562 for the 50-watt, 2.66-GHz L5430; $1,386 for the 120-watt, 3.33-GHz X5470; $1,493 for the 150-watt, 3.4-GHz X5492; and $1,172 for the 80-watt, 3.5-GHz X5270.
