Device drivers are used for a large number of applications, thanks to modern operating systems and hardware becoming so diverse. Device drivers are usually needed for the operating system or programs to communicate with a device attached to your computer. Device drivers are specific to an operating system, and they depend on the hardware. The right device driver choice and installation is an essential part of the configuration of your computer. If you are missing crucial device drivers, your system will be affected in different ways, depending on which drivers you need.
How Do Applications Use their Respective Device Drivers?
Printer device drivers are one application for these software programs. Network cards may also use device drivers, and so do video adapters. Many different types of local buses also use device drivers to function correctly. The hard disc bus, the floppy disc bus, and the CD-Rom bus all use device drivers to operate and communicate. These drivers are also needed for sound cards, support implementation of file systems which are different, and digital cameras, as well as image scanners. These are just some of the applications which use device drivers to communicate with the operating system and programs. Just about everything that connects to your PC uses a device driver to give and receive information from it.
Virtual device drivers have different applications than other device drivers. Virtual device drivers simulate a hardware device, and these are used especially in certain environments. One example is if a computer with Windows operating system runs an MS-DOS program. The function of virtual device drivers is to allow the guest operating system which is being run in a virtual machine to be able to believe it is accessing real hardware instead of virtual hardware. The virtual device driver receives function calls when the guest operating system tries to access the hardware.
Device drivers are needed for almost every process on our computers, and without these software programs the computer we find so useful would not be worth anything, because the operating system may not even work. Many times when a program or device will not work correctly, the device drivers on your system may be partially to blame. Many people have accidentally erased device drives, but if this happens to you do not panic. Most device drives that are commonly used can be downloaded from the Internet or the device manufacturer, and then it is a simple matter of installing the correct device drivers again.
Audio device drivers control hardware that is associated with the audio on your computer system, including your speakers. Some motherboards may have built in audio chipsets, and if the Windows operating system is installed again it can corrupt or erase the device drivers, forcing you to install them again before your audio hardware will work. No matter which hardware device you are trying to use on your computer, if the correct device driver is not functioning right then the hardware will not respond or send information to the operating systems and programs.
