If you think that foldable computer and TV screens will stay as a work of science fiction movies and novels then think again. Scientists and researchers at the Sony and the Max Planck Institute found a way to fold screens, making it fit our very own pockets.

The finding was revealed in the New Journal of Physics. This revolution in screen displays tells that it is possible for the organic light emitting displays to be “folded”. The finding was based on red or IR-A light upconversion.

Enthusiasts see that this technology will change the way people utilize visual image thru computer and TV screens. Mass-production of image posters for advertising is seen as its primary application.

In 2006, Sony developed flexible OLED display screens. While the design holds a lot of potential, it did not reach the market because of glitches and limitations in functionality.

Max Planck Institute researchers boasted that the new screens do not have the OLED problems. The researchers also insisted that the new model can be utilized for a lot of applications. Unlike the first prototype, this one uses a unique combination of organic compounds within viscous polymeric matrix. This technology allows the screen to be any size and under any resolution.

Sony is not the only company working on foldable screens. Philips and Seiko are also looking into this as the future of TV and computer screens. Reports also indicated that a Cambridge-based firm will release a foldable e-reader.
