Samsung Electronics Co. teamed up with Sun Microsystems Inc to produce an amazing high-endurance 8GB single-level cell NAND flash memory chip. This small piece of hardware can increase the life span, performance and efficiency of solid-state drives.
The NAND memory chip boosts the efficiency of solid-state drives by increasing its write and erase cycle by up to five times. This allows present solid-state drives to be used and reused more than half a million times. The current SLC NAND flash memory that is currently being used only allows for 100,000 write/erase cycle before it renders the drives unusable.
Graham Lovell, Sun’s senior director of Open Storage on the other hand refused to disclose technical details of the chip. He stressed however that the new product is sure to meet the high quality standards of many IT corporations.
The product will be launched under Samsung’s name. Sun on the other hand will be releasing its very own solid-state technology hard drive later this year.
Experts agree that the new NAND flash memory chip will have a great impact in high-end data processing applications and other systems that require fast and massive resources for data processing. This is also seen to improve al lot of data intensive server operations and storage operations. There are even people who say that NAND flash memory chip will totally replace traditional spinning drives in the coming years.
Samsung is yet to announce the release of the product.
