Cuil, another site that aims to topple the search engine giant Google has been launched. But what separates Cuil from the other Google wannabes is that this site is headed by former Google employees.
Cuil, which is based in Menlo Park, California, is led by former Google’s search index leader Anna Patterson, and her husband, Tom Costello, a search engine expert from Stanford University and IBM. They are respectively the president and CEO of the new search engine.
Cuil’s vice president is Russel Power, also a former Google employee who worked on indexing, web rankings and spam detection.
The company claims that it has already indexed 120 billion web pages. Different from Google they said that they can provide results based on ideas and not on popularity. They also offer privacy for search engine users.
Cuil exposed that they are using a different algorithm in ranking search engine results. They analyze the context of each page and the concepts behind each search engine query. With this, Cuil is able to categorize each search engine result, with tabs and other user friendly search refining options.
