Device drivers are software or small programs that enable the different parts of your computer system, e.g., printer, speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc., to “talk” to each other and work perfectly together.
What most people don’t realize is that when they purhcase new hardware, oftentimes, they also bring home old device drivers with them. This is because device makers rewrite and update drivers all the time. They do this to ensure that their products work best for you. However, there’s one small problem: often, these manufacturers don’t have the best means to relay to you these driver updates. That is, apart from simply posting them on their websites. You may be thinking “well, that’s good enough!” but really, it isn’t.
Just think of how many parts or components your entire computer system is made of. Now think of the dozens or even hundreds of manufacturers that you need to keep track of! All those sites, all those device driver monitoring. And then you have to do it all over again on a weekly or monthly basis. This is really a tremendous waste of time!
Besides, it’s not as if your computer will actually inform you that devices connected to it need new drivers. Most PCs actually run on old device drivers and users don’t realize they need new drivers… until it’s too late.
So what do you do? The best thing is really to find a tool that simply checks your PC and all it’s components and then checks if the drivers you have are old or new.
These tools are usually called device driver update software and all you have to do is install them on your computer and use their “driver scans”. The scan results will list down the devices linked to your PC - you’ll be surprised at how many! - and compare the drivers your PC has to its own database. (The makers of the driver update software see to it that their database checks the sites of thousands of device manufacturers and any driver updates they release almost daily.)
From the resulting driver scan, all you need to do is click on a link and download the device driver you need. That’s it! And for that seemingly mild effort, you ensure your PC is optimized for excellent performance.
