If you want an iPhone but not the service carrier that comes bundled with it, the Brazilians have found a solution for you.

A Brazilian firm DesbloqueioBr is claiming to be the first to have unlocked Apple’s most coveted 3G iPhone. The report has been confirmed by a Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo as well as various online sources.

The firm was able to make iPhone work outside the service of the network providers that Apple partnered with by altering the phone’s firmware and adding a special card add-on to the SIM chip. This allowed iPhone to connect to any carrier.

Even more surprising is the fact that iPhone is not even officially available in the country! Brazilians need either to go abroad or purchase it online to get their hands on the new phone.

However, the Brazilian unlock method doesn’t come cheap. It will cost between 250 to 375 dollars. That makes the hack’s price very close to the price of the unit itself.

And yet… the Brazilian hack is not perfect. According to Folha Online, Breno MacMasi disclosed that the phone’s connectivity can vary. Breno MacMasi is DesbloqueioBr’s partner.

A software update can also nullify the hack. Even so, MacMasi said that there will always be ways to unlock the iPhone.
