This may be a downer for those who already have the MacBook Air, but Apple Inc. recently slashed $500 off the original price of the upper-end Mac, reducing its price to $2,598.
The MacBook Air which was launched last January exists in two configurations. The first one has an 80GB hard drive backed by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The high-end version boasts a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a 1.8 GHz processor.
The price drop was unannounced. It was websites such as the AppleInsider.com that saw the price difference. The price actually dropped by 16% last July 3. The high-end MacBook Air was originally tagged at $3,098. The 64GB version however stays at $1,799.
A price reduction in Mac products is relatively rare. This is actually far from Apple’s pricing model. The company usually retains prices per configuration.
The new pricing crowns the 17-inch MacBook Pro as Apple’s most expensive notebook. It is currently valued at $2,799.
