Samsung SSDRight at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum in Taiwan, Samsung announced that it has started to develop a 256GB SSD (Solid State Drive). Samsung’s new SSD does have a big capacity compared to today’s SSD’s. The typical SSD in most laptops/notebooks would be 64GB. Samsung claims the new drive has the fastest data transfer rates ever. The new drive has a sequential reading speed of 200 megabytes per second and sequential writing speed of 160 megabytes per second.

Samsung’s new SSD is using the MLC (Multi level Cell) technology along with a high speed SATA (Serial ATA) II interface. Samsung is expected to begin production of this product by the end of the year. The customer samples are planned to be ready by next September. These SSD’s are 2.5 inch, but 1.8 inch version is planned to be available.

SSD’s involve no mechanical movement, which means that they’re free from mechanical failures and mechanical delays of hard disk drives. SSD’s are adopted by notebook manufacturers these days. Intel is also planning to announce its high capacity SSD’s this year. PC vendors are expected to use these SSD’s with the upcoming notebooks using Centrino 2 (Montevina) Intel technology.
