Friendster, one of the largest social networking sites today, is now using Google’s OpenSocial API.

Friendster’s embrace of the API is not a surprise since its Developer Program, which was launched late last year, long expressed support for the big G’s OpenSocial project.

David Jones, vice president of global marketing for Friendster said that their decision to incorporate Google’s OpenSocial API was based on their goal to help build and distribute the applications of developers across multiple destination and platforms.

Friendster incorporated APIs from the 0.7 release of the OpenSocial specification to facilitate integration with existing OpenSocial applications. Friendster is also hoping to support more OpenSocial APIs in the near future.

Friendster currently tops the list of the most used social networking site in Asia. It dominates the niche with 55 million users. Recent moves gears the social networking site to catch up with MySpace and Facebook in other regions, particularly in the U.S.

OpenSocial is currently supported by other big names in the web, including LinkedIn, MySpace, Yahoo and Google’s very own Orkut.
