Yahoo is in a rampage of killing its social networking site, and the latest to be smashed to death is its “Mash.” Compared to the Yahoo 360, Mash didn’t even left the invite-only beta stage.
Mash started just about a year ago but Yahoo decided that age is enough to finally execute the social networking site. The bad news was cascaded to its few users thru an email.
Mash users received this email from Yahoo community manager Matt Warburton:
Thank you for trying out our Mash Beta service. We hope you had fun with it. Please note that we will shut down Mash on September 29, 2008. As a result, your current profile on Mash will no longer be available.
Mash as many would agree is a clear relative of Facebook and MySpace. The only thing that separates the dead social networking site from the others is its unique Wiki feature where users can actually update their friend’s pages.
Jerry Young blogged about Yahoo’s plan on its social networking sites a year ago. He leaked that Yahoo will shut down its network sites in order “to transition Yahoo! 360 to a more integrated Yahoo! ‘profile’ experience.”
Yahoo currently has Kickstart as its sole social networking site. Kickstart is geared towards college students, but up to now, the site is still yet to make any impact.
