Openmoko recently revealed that hey have shipped their latest Linux-based handset to five large distributors. This is based on their grand goal to expand and address a wider set of consumers.
Openmoko is a manufacturer of open source mobile phones. The new phone, called Neo FreeRunner, has been shipped to Pulster, Golden Delicious Computers and Germany-based TRIsoft and Bearstech in France and IDA Systems based in India – five locations that guarantee to make Neo FreeRunner’s market existence felt.
The project followed the original success of Neo 1973. Because of that triumph, Openmoko built a new and more flexible model. Neo FreeRunner runs on 850 MHz or 900 MHz that is within the range of telecommunication frequencies worldwide. Being open source, it has a large community of followers and developers that set the phone apart from other brands.
Neo FreeRunner boasts of extensive interior customization capability. Users can freely download the original phone software in Openmoko’s website. Again, because of its nature, there are also a number of customized phone software that are available for download.
Neo FreeRunner is a touchscreen phone and it carries pretty much most of the phone basics that you need. It has a 2.8 inch (480×640 pixel) VGA display. It has an in-built GPS, Bluetooth, 128 RAM, a 400MHz processor, USB connectivity, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, two 3D accelerometers and an SD-card slot.
Priced at $399, the Neo Freerunner touchscreen phone will be available in Openmoko’s website for online purchase as well as thru distributors in India and Europe.
