Yesterday, Wikia Search has announced the addition of some new cool features to its Wikia Search Engine. Users can now do some searching using the engine, and if they don’t like the results, they can change them. Changes made are not only for their own results, but for any other user who performs the same search - using the same keyword(s).
Extensive search-results editing utilities are now provided for the engine users. A user is now able to change a certain result position by giving it some rating. Users are also able to completely omit a result if they think its irrelevant to their keyword(s). The can add entirely new ones as well. Users can modify the text displayed with results. It doesn’t stop here, users can add code to some results maybe to do another specific search, like the search-within-search function provided by Google.
Hopefully, the search results will be improved by experts or people with a well meaning. Still, the new result-editng capability is dangerous. Results could be affected by people who will try to promote their websites through manipulating with the results. They could put higher rankings to their websites and totally omit their competitors’ websites.
Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia and Wiki, admits that it’s hardly a crawl for the web, but it’s a beginning. He expects that this move will enhance the experience of surfing the web, just as Wikipedia did.
