Bluetooth, one of the most successful wireless technologies, has proved to be successful for many applications. Most portable devices now have Bluetooth protocol support on them. For cell phones with bluetooth support, you can connect to other phones nearby and share files with them, you can connect your Bluetooth headset or any other Bluetooth accessories. Seems like there is more!
At Purdue University, scientists have recently announced that they can track the speed of moving Bluetooth-capable devices. Since each Bluetooth device has aunique digital signature, it could be tracked easily.
Researchers think that there are many applications to this. It could be used for estimating how long you have to wait in that security line at the airport for example. Or maybe, Bluetooth receivers on roadsides could track your speed and tell you how long it will take to reach your destination via Bluetooth as well.
The method was tested on specific routes to test the speed of about 1.2% of their average daily traffic, which is about 1 vehicle out of each 100 vehicles on these roads. Researchers say that its easy to create those tracking systems sicne the technology is already available.
