Yahoo unveiled a sneak preview of BrowserPlus. BrowserPlus is a powerful desktop utility that enables rich user interaction with the web browser. Yahoo’s main goal is to attract more users to web applications, rather than programs running natively on their PC’s. This will give expansion to what anybody could do using the internet. Google had the main goal earlier with its Gears project launched before.
Only some features were shown in the Yahoo’s three demos on their website. A god feature is the ability to drag and drop files for upload. This was shown in a Flickr drag and drop image uploader demo. The demo also showed abilities to rotate, crop or tag the photos. The new browser has an IRC chat client and a JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) for programmers.
“Different Web sites can use BrowserPlus to support things like drag and drop from the desktop, easier file uploads, more efficient and secure acquisition of feeds and information, and native desktop notifications,” said Yahoo.
BrowserPlus works with Internet Explorer 7 or later, Firefox 2 or later and Safari 3 or later. It currently works on Mac OS X10.4 , Windows XP or Vista. For those who want to try out the demo, it’s available on the BrowserPlus demo site.
