Windows Lost EXE File Association
Home

As we use our PCs, it’s common to encounter EXE-related problems. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy to fix exe errors because there are many reasons that can cause such a problem. Following are a few things you can do to get rid of EXE errors.

Solution #1: Clean up your PC.
Overtime, our computers get bogged down with many files and documents that we may no longer need. For instance, you may have installed software before to try it or to use it just that one time. Now, even though you’re not using the program, it’s hogging important disk space which may be the cause of EXE errors on your PC.

Access the Windows Add/Remove feature and see which programs can be uninstalled.

Solution #2: Clear any temporary files.
As you go online, plenty of files are downloaded and installed on your PC. These files are meant to be ‘temporary’ but if you don’t actively get rid of them, they will take up space and be a cause of many PC errors.

So go to your C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folders and delete the *.tmp files you find.

You can also open your web browser (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and go to Tools->Options and clear any Recent History records and Temporary files.

Solution #3: See if you can do an exe file association fix.
If the EXE error you are experiencing is really related to an EXE file association error, then try to uninstall and then re-install the related program.

For instance, if an audio file will not launch using your installed audio software (e.g., Roxio), uninstall that application and reinstall it.

On the other hand, if a Microsoft file won’t open, then use the program’s built-in Detect and Repair function (accessible via the Help menu) to fix the problem.

For example, if [filename].doc file will not open in MS Word, running Detect and Repair will basically instruct MS Word to check for any exe file association errors and fix it.

Solution #4: Run a registry cleaner.
Oftentimes, EXE errors are due to corrupt entries in the Windows registry. In this regard, you’re better off using a high-quality registry cleaner to solve the problem. Such a tool will get rid of damaged or corrupt entries in the registry and so any incorrect exe file association will be repaired, enabling yu to open your files and documents again without any glitches.
